Flooring Ideas – Icing on the Cake

Apr 3, 2018

Flooring is like the icing on the cake in your new design – although it’s on the bottom. Flooring gives the finishing touch to your new kitchen or bath design. It ties everything together. Depending on your likes, type of traffic, use for the room and overall design, the choices in flooring can be endless. Ease of cleaning, your lifestyle and comfort under foot should all be considered. The flooring needs to reflect your style, just as the rest of the space, but be easy for you to maintain.

There are so many flooring ideas to consider. These are some of the trends, but also mainstays in flooring design. Which one appeals to you and your needs?

Natural Stone
Natural stone has a big advantage over other flooring surfaces – no piece is exactly the same. The unique pattern, texture colors make natural stone floors a beautiful choice.

The various types of natural stone: limestone, slate, granite or travertine are all choices of natural stone. The variations in color and texture give a feeling of depth and warmth to you kitchen or bath.

Natural stone floors need maintenance and some are better than others for durability. For instance, natural slate is beautiful, but can shale (pieces come of naturally, kind of like shedding) and is soft so is prone to scratches. Limestone, travertine, and marble also can scratch whereas granite is much more durable.

Ceramic Tile Flooring
Ceramic tile is an excellent choice for heavy traffic areas. The textures, colors and styles are endless. Some styles even offer the option of decorative borders or designs. Ceramic tile also gives the option of being tied into your backsplash choice. It can be a continuation of the material.

Hardwood
Hardwood flooring has been a popular choice for many years and for good reason. The variations in color and patterns offer many choices. With proper treatment and maintenance, hardwood can withstand the moisture and heavy traffic of the kitchen.

Cork
Cork flooring is sustainably harvested and all natural. Its eco-friendliness has made it a popular choice and its distinctive look has strong texture and gives a warm look

Bamboo
Bamboo flooring has become a popular choice in recent years. It looks like wood but bamboo is actually a grass. Bamboo is surprisingly durable, and its density stands up to the heavy traffic that occurs in the kitchen. More affordable than hardwood and it’s variations in color have made it a popular choice.

Laminate
Laminate flooring is flooring composed of manmade materials that have been pressed together. It can have the look of wood, tile or stone. It resists scratching, which is great for home with children and pets.

Just as with cakes in the bakery, flooring ideas are endless. As always, do your homework and ask a professional about the durability and maintenance; especially in a high-traffic kitchen.
